Team "ZeroEight" already published an event report on their website => [LINK]

Alghero could be the venue for the 2012 Worlds, therefore the Italian class did all to make the competitors feel comfortable - including a 500 € voucher to sponsor the ferry-costs.

15.04.2010 SUCCESS FOR SWISS BOAT AT SCARLINO

5 Swiss boats competed at the Volvo Cup II in Scarlino from 09.-11. April - and all of them showed a very good performance.

SUI 782 "Blu Moon" from Lago Maggiore was the winner of the event with just 8 points in 6 races/1discard. But the result of the others were impressing as well:

  •   5th: SUI 599 "PoiZon Rouge", Jean Marc Monnard
  • 10th: SUI 578 "Music 55", Huber/Boy
  • 27th: SUI 382 "ZeroEight", Michael Good
  • 33rd: SUI 336 "EFG Bank", Amrein/Keller

Below the official report from IMCA describing day 3 which was sailed in very challenging conditions:

The final day of the Melges 24 Volvo Cup in Scarlino brought a complete change of conditions on the Gulf of Follonica with strong offshore winds of 30+ knots, big seas and one final and utterly spectacular race - the sixth of the series. For the 63 competitors it was a case of survival of the fittest, with a number of broken masts and gear failures as well as some of the most exciting Melges 24 sailing in recent years.

Flavio Favini and his hugely experienced team aboard Franco Rossini's Blu Moon proved once again that they deserve their reputation as one of the best Melges 24 crews in the World by putting in a bravura performance despite the rapidly increasing wind strength and challenging seas. They led the race at the first mark and held onto that lead throughout, although even they struggled at times, putting in a quick but rapidly re-controlled broach at the top of the second run before storming off downwind in a ball of spray to the finish and overall victory.

The indomitable and ever consistent UKA UKA Racing team of Lorenzo Santini with Lorenzo Bressani at the helm was also revelling in the strong winds and their fourth place was sufficient to ensure they retained their overnight grip on second overall.

Also showing outstanding control and boat handling were Alberto Bolzan and his crew aboard Paolo Testolin's Hurricane/Murphy & Nye, who crossed the line in second place and moved up in the overall standings from fifth to third, just beating Estonia's Tonu Toniste aboard EST790 Lenny who came sixth in the race to tie on overall points with Bolzan who only claimed the final podium position on countback.

Switzerland's Jean-Marc Monnard aboard Poizon Rouge, who had gone into the day tied for third place with Toniste, also sailed admirably but his tenth place in race six meant he dropped down into fifth overall.

Our thanks to the Club Nautico Scarlino, the Italian Melges 24 Fleet and of course to Volvo Cars Italy for another spectacular Volvo Cup event. The next regatta in the series takes place from 6-9 May in Alghero, Sardinia and incorporates the 2010 Melges 24 Italian Championship. Further details are available from

15.01.2010 decisons during EGM, 12th Jan '10

Tuesday evening, January 12 the EGM (Extraordinary General Meeting) of International Melges 24 Class Association (IMCA) took place via Skype online.

The main issues were the ballots concerning the proposals for the rule changes (see file attached).

Here comes the results of the ballots in details:
-Rule C.9.7. / accepted concordantly
-Rule F.3.2. / accepted concordantly

That means: I will be allowed to use either Forestay-Systems, the conventional rigging with “flying” Forestay as well as the System with fixed Wire.

-Rule C.2. (Crew weighing) / Changes to this rules has been deleted/postponed) from the actual proposals.

That means: The Rules concerning crew weight and weight-control will continue as they have been used for the time being. The technical committee will work on a proper and fair solutions to change this rule for the future and will present new proposals for the AGM (Annual General Meeting) in November 2010. So, the rule changes has been postponed but not finally deleted.

The notice of race is published in english, please follow the [LINK] - it would be a great pleasure to meet as many boats as possible from the Swiss Class there!!

26. - 28.06.2009 Swiss Open 2009, Kreuzlingen

For the second time the Swiss Open were hosted by Segler Vereinigung Kreuzlingen - 13 boats signed in but 2 boats hat to withdraw due to some illness of crews. Any way 11 boats are not so boat as the Swiss Class is just starting to set up their own events. A littel disapointing that there was just one boat from Bavaria and even some boats from Lake Constance didn't find time to participate.

The crews which decided to participate didn't regret it as the weekend presented the full range of weather you may expect: Summer, Sum, strong wind, light wind and some rainfalls as well. This have been challenging conditions and finally the best teams were to be found on the top of the results list.

On Friday 2 races were sailed in light winds with max. 9 knots and in the third race wind picked up to 15 knots and some good reaching was guaranteed.

The races on Friday were won by SUI 382 (race 1 + 3) and ITA 783 (race 2).

On Saturday the day started grey but still dry and with winds up to 12 knots - later the day it began to rain and it was really a wet business to sail the Melges24, steady winds with 9 - 12 knots helped to keep the crews happy. But by the afternoon the sun was back and the temperatures rised again but the wind died to a light breeze with 5 knots. The teams which know how to change the boat's setup fast and efficient did have a good advantage.

The best performance and boat of the day was Riccardo Simoneschi's "Audi powered by Q8" (ITA 783) winning 4, 5 and 6. Race 7 was won the locals on "Sonnenkönig" (SUI 684) helmed by Stefan Stäheli and owned by Armin Schmid.

For Sunday 3 more races were scheduled but these had to be cancelled due to a lack of wind -  craning in bright sunshine started 12:00 and was finished on 13:00 to be followed by the price giving ceremony.

The TOP 5:

  1. ITA 783 "Audi powered by Q8" Riccardo Simoneschi - 8 points
  2. SUI 382 "ZeroEigth" Michael Good - 18 points
  3. GER 672 "Pearl" Peter Göckel - 25 points
  4. GER 640 "Ka Nalu Nui" Günter Tzeschlock - 25 points
  5. SUI 684 "Sonnenkönig" Stäheli / Schmid - 27 points

A very warm applause during the price giving was dedicated to the volunteer team of SVK. Organisation was excellent and the teams enjoyed the dinners on Friady and Saturday night very much. Not a big surprise as Peter Fritschi was co-organizing the event - Peter is crew-member of "Sonnenkönig" but this weekend he decided to work for the club. Many thanks to Peter and his team.

Great success for the Italian Class with 54 boats starting for the Volvo Cup races in Punta Ala. The Volvo Cup is a MUST for many boats from other class associations as well - this is proofed by 10 Nations signing in on Thursday, 23.04.

Light and shifty winds one day 1 + 2 but strong winds on day 3 where the ingredients for a challenging event. In the end the Italian teams showed (again) the best performance and took the places 1 - 3. Another impressive show - or: "business as usual"....

30.10. - 02.11.2008 "Novembre à Hyères"

Last event in the IMCA World Ranking 2008 and it seems the French class recovers a little from their problem they had in 2007 - perhaps a reaction on the Europeans ahead, which will be sailed in Hyères in August 2009.

27 boats signed in and showed up at the starting line. The Swiss Class was represented by "Poizon Rouge" (Jean Marc Monnard), "Music 55" (Ruedi Huber), "Zero Two" (Michael Good) and "Mad Cow" (Thierry Verhulst).

25.10.-01.11.2008 "North American Championships", Annapolis

Far far away, but anyway Swiss boats at the starting line. Italian class member Franco Rossi's SUI 521 "Blu Moon" helmed by Flavio Favini sailed there to test the waters for the 2009 Worlds which will be sailed at the same venue.

The week presented the whole weather range you can expect in an autumn regatta: Terrible cold (5° C) with a lot of wind (25 knots) up to to lovely "Indian Summer" with 20° C and just 5-10 knots of wind.

Finally the best one won the event (as always): Terry Hutchinson added the NA title to his long list of successes, secon place was taken by "Team Joe Fly" helmed by 470-Oilympian Gabriele Zandona and thrid place went to the Swiss Boat "SUI 521" Blu Moon - Congratulations from the Swiss Class Association to Franco Rossini and his team.

An excellent opportunity to finish the summer-break in Melges24 racing.

As Lago Maggiore is so close to Switzerland it would be a great gesture to visit Flavio Favini in his home waters and to race against him and Franco Rossinis’s “Blu Moon”.

Perhaps Luino could be an opportunity for the Swiss Open 2009….

See you in Luino – Günter, 12.07.2008

20. - 22.06.2008 "1st Melges24 Swiss Open", Kreuzlingen

      SUI 599 "Poizon Rouge"

Jean-Marc Monnard and Crew on SUI 599 "Poizon Rouge" are the winners of the "1st Melges24 Swiss Open" sailed in Kreuzlingen. Bright sunshine, 25 - 30 degrees, 7 races, light to medium breeze and 14 boats - this could be the short description for this fantastic event organized by SVK and sponsored by "ZeroTwo - e.brokerline".

Due to the date very close to the Worlds 2008 the organizers and the Swiss Class were happy to have 14 boats at the starting line representing 5 (!) different nations (SUI, GER, HUN, ITA, IRL).

On Friday 3 races were sailed in 10-15 knots breeze from the West and each race took 80 minutes, so the crews were happy to relax when they were back in the harbour. The event sponsor "Zero Two e.brokerline" paid for meal and drinks and later "public viewing" of the football match was offered and many crews stayed until midnight (some crews even longer!!).

On Saturday 4 races could be sailed to complete the series, the fleet left the harbour around 10:00 o'clock and returend around 18:00 - a long day with tough racing in light to medium breeze, sometimes with tricky windshifts close to the shoreline.

For the evening we met again for drinks and meals - again many thanks to the sponsors. Price giving was held in the halftime of the football-match Russia/Netherlands and Jean Marc Monnard from Lake Geneva sailing SUI 599 "Poizon Rouge" could win the 1st Swiss Open Melges24.

On Sunday morning the crews met to crane out the boats and to leave for their trips home.

Many thanks to Peter Fritschi (crew on 3rd placed "SUI 705" Sonnenkönig) who organized this event for the Swiss Class.

We now already look for next years location, several options are discussed - details on this will follow soon.

The results:

1. SUI 599 "Poizon Rouge" - Jean Marc Monnard, 11 pts.
2. HUN 728 "Proximo" - Arpad Litkey, 18 p.
3. SUI 705 "Sonnenkönig I"- Nico Delle Karth, 20 p.
4. GER 640 "Ka Nalu Nui" - Günter Tzeschlock, 25 p.

 (c) Paul Todd

The wellknown sailing venue in Sardinia proofed to be to one of the best race areas in the world. An excellent race-management with Peter Reggio on the "Gold-Circle" and IMCA's Hank Stuart on the "Silver-Circle" presented 12 challenging races to the 114-boat-fleet.

Finally the Italian team showed the strongest perfomance and kept the title in Italy.

01. - 04.05.2008 "Italian Nationals / Volvo Cup III", Cagliari

61 teams from all over Europe met in Cagliari to sail Volvo Cup II which was nominated by the Italian Class as "Italian National 2008" - therefor this event will count for the IMCA world ranking.

This race was the final tune-up for the Italians before the Worlds 2008 in Porto Cervo - most of the crews will return to "daily business" but some of them will stay in Sardinia for some training sessions.

The Italian teams showed a very strong performance and took places 1-3:

  • 1st place: ITA 633 "Joe Fly" G. Maspero/Gabrio Zandona 46 P.
  • 2nd place: ITA 715 "Uka Uka" Lorenzo Bressani 55 P.
  • 3rd place: ITA 667 "Brontolo" Matteo Ivaldi 63 P.

The Swiss class participated with 6 teams and took the places:

  •   4th place: SUI 521 "Blu Moon" Franco Rossini / Flavio Favini
  • 37th place: SUI 578 "Music 55" Ruedi Huber / Sönke Boy
  • 38th place: SUI 382 "ZeroTwo" Michael Good
  • 46th place: SUI 530 "Acqua" Marco Tribo / Matthias Keller
  • 48th place: SUI 684 "Sonnenkönig"  Armin Schmid / Rolf Zwicky
  • 56th place: SUI 336 "Meiter Ropes" Hansmartin Amrein / Alain Stettler

The race-conditions were excellent. A steady - sometime gusty - seabreeze up to 22 knots guaranteed challenging conditions. All the top teams are ready for the Worlds and therefore tough racing was expected.

12 . / 13.04.2008 "UBS-Sportboat-Cup", Kreuzlingen

   HUN 728 "Proximo"

The first race in Switzerland in 2008 has been sailed on the weekend 12./13. April 2008 at Kreuzlingen. 10 Melges24 participated in the UBS-Sportboat-Cup 2008 organized by "Segler-Vereinigung-Kreuzlingen". In total 36 sportboats were on the starting line and tried to compete with Melges24.

6 races were sailed - 4 of them on Saturday in winds up to 12 knots, 2 of them on Sunday in lighter winds.

The race committee did a great job supported by Peter Fritschi, normally crew on SUI 684 and by the sponsors UBS and Sonnenkönig (owned by Armin Schmid).

The Melges24 class was dominated by HUN 728 “Proximo” with Arpad Litkey on the helm winning all 4 races on Saturday and a 2nd and a 3rd on Sunday. No big surprise as this team has been sailed a lot since entering the Melges24-class.

Second place was taken by the local crew on SUI 684 “Sonnenkönig” helmed by Stefan Stäheli – third place went to GER 640 “Ka Nalu Nui” owned and helmed by Günter Tzeschlock, secretary of the Swiss Class.

 Top 3 (HUN 728, SUI 684, GER 640)

It was no surprise that the Melges24 could win the Overall Ranking for Sportboats under ORC-handicap but 4th, 7th and 9th place went to Melges24 as well. The now 15 year old design proofed again to be the leading sportboat in the world.

The social events are important as well – Friday night the Melges24 sailors met in nice restaurant with own brewery, Saturday night the organizers offered a diner to all sailors. All of us had a lot of fun.

Segler-Vereinigung-Kreuzlingen proofed to be a well organized team and we look forward to a successful to the “1st Melges24 Swiss Open” on 20.-22. June 2008.
